KNOXVILLE LEADS CITIES WITH TWO CHAMPS, FINALIST

The home state of Alabama was the leader with six champions and six finalists in the 2019 Combo Doubles Southern Sectional Championships played Dec. 6-8 in Mobile, Ala. No state has been so dominant at a Southern sectional in recent memory.

Tennessee’s notable showing consisted of five winners and two finalists. Arkansas and Mississippi finished with two titlists and five second-place teams.

Knoxville, Tenn. led cities with two winners and a finalist among 25 championships. North Little Rock, Ark. also had a strong showing with a champion and two finalists. Two of the Alabama titlists were from Mobile.

The weekend event featured 173 men’s and women’s teams with more than 1,600 players from nine states competing in three age levels: 18 & Over (11 divisions), 40 & Over (eight divisions) and 55 & Over (six divisions). The tournament was presented by USTA Southern in cooperation with strong local volunteer support.

The Copeland-Cox Mobile Tennis Center served as tournament headquarters. Other matches were played at Lyons Park, the Country Club of Mobile, Oakwood Swim & Racquet Club and Mirror Lake Racquet Club.
